This Week in Malta: Tsunami Warnings and Floriana Facelift

Monday (Sept 1st):  A massive tsunami could hit Malta any day!  At least that's how the newspapers are trying to spin a rather more mundane news item.  In fact it was discovered that there was a tsunami about 350 years ago which hit the north east of the island, and thus it is technically possible that there could be another one.  Despite the fact that I live in the North East of the island, I am not losing any sleep.

Tuesday:  Floriana is due to get a big of a facelift, which to be quite honest it could do with.  At the moment it's a dusty, traffic-clogged main street adjacent to a big square and some government buildings.

Wednesday:  The "biggest music event" in Malta has been cancelled just a day before it was due to start.  So no heaven on this part of the earth, and it's not altogether clear if people are being refunded for their €30 tickets.

Thursday:  Tween favourite Loom Bands have been Loom Banned (headline writers seem to have missed that one) in Malta.  There are some chemicals in them or something, I don't really care.  'Loom Banned'.

Friday:  A new speed camera has been installed at the Xemxija bypass.  Honest to God this is what passes for a news story around here.

Saturday:  Apparently Malta has gone Kate-crazy, in advance of the visit of the Duchess of Cambridge.  Can't say that I've noticed.

Sunday: A skinny-dipping Frenchman gets fined €4,000.  Nobody wins in this situation.
