Monday: Not much happened on Monday.
Tuesday: The oldest ship in the Med is a couple of kilometres off the coast of Gozo. The Phoenician vessel is 2700 years old, but it's not going anywhere fast as it's been lying on the seabed for most of that time.
Wednesday: Newly married Brad and Angelina arrive in Malta to start filming their latest movie. They seem to have rented and cordoned off a good chunk of Gozo for the purpose, so no doubt some locals have made a tidy profit.
Thursday: 257 migrants were rescued and brought to Malta today. And this year alone over 2,000 people have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to cross to Europe from North Africa. It seems to be common practice for people smugglers to tow vessels full of migrants into European waters and then scuttle them, so that European coast guards rescue and bring them to shore. If they are not fortunate enough to be rescued, they meet a tragic end. This is a massive, massive problem for countries in the Med, and one to which the rest of the world pays little attention.
Friday: In lighter news, a couple of art installations have arrived onto the streets of Valletta. One is a horse and the other looks like some sort of instrument of torture inside a fish tank. But don't take my word for it, go to Valletta and check them out for yourself.
Saturday: Early in the year the Health Minister decided it would be a good idea to erect a big tent next to the Mater Dei hospital to cater for a potential influx of flu victims. The government had a hasty change of mind, and took it down again. €8,000 please Mr and Mrs taxpayer! It's reassuring to know that my hard-earned taxes are being used to support local businesses in this manner.
Sunday: A Polish IT worker pushed a woman into the sea 'for a joke'. She was not amused. 3 month jail term (suspended).
