This Week in Malta: Book Thieves and Burglaries

Saturday: Ten thousand books have not been returned to the library of the University of Malta.  And people say that kids today don't read books any more?

Sunday: An elderly couple in Sliema had their front door burned by an unknown miscreant.  This door burning business goes on quite a lot in Malta for some reason, I really don't know why.  And in this case, neither do the unfortunate older couple.  Perhaps a misplaced act of vengance for some perceived slight, and the wrong door got in the way.

Monday:  Sliema residents are alarmed by a spate of burglaries in the area, and want to know what the police are doing about it.  The Home Affairs minister replies that it's not easy controlling people who 'come to Malta via the catamaran', which rather suggests that those pesky foreigners are the chief suspects.

Tuesday: An explosion at the aging power plant in Marsa plunge the entire nation into darkness for about 3 hours.  A shop near me kept going by having someone sat in their car outside the window shining their headlights inside, and working out people's change on a phone.  A restaurant got out a barbecue for cooking, and lit the tables with candles.

Wednesday:  Negotiations have started with a Spanish company (Autobuses de Leon) to take over running the buses in Malta.  Hopefully the negotiations will conclude before I am eligible for a bus pass.

Thursday: 80 swimmers had to be assisted by lifeguards yesterday at Comino's Blue Lagoon.  Have you seen the Blue Lagoon?  It's not exactly the Atlantic Ocean, but you've gotta watch out for those currents.

Friday: Still worrying about power cuts... apparently a big enough outage would mean that water would run out in 2 days, and sewage would overflow.  We are 48 hours away from the Apocalypse, people.
