The Maltese flag flew for the first time ever at a Winter Olympics this year.
The summer island was represented in the snow of Sochi by a French girl (with a Maltese grandad) named Elise Pellegrin, who went in the Giant Slalom today. Sadly, she did not win a medal.
In fact she came in 65th out of 67 finishers, to continue Malta's less than stellar level of sporting performance on the international stage.
To be fair, Alpine skiing is not exactly the type of sport you would expect to thrive in if you are from a flat Mediterranean island which has never seen more than the lightest flurry of snow. It tends to happen that sporting excellence in a particular discipline becomes focused in a particular area (Jamaican sprinters, Dutch skaters, and so on) but skiing is just not going to thrive in this country.
I reckon that instead, the sporting council here should push for the inclusion of bocci in the next summer games - then they might really be able to get in the medals.
