In no particular order then:
Scotts: There are a couple of these about, and they are pretty good value. Good for fresh meat as they have a butcher in-store. Signature product: Fresh Maltese sausages.
Miracle: Mostly frozen products at low prices. You can often see what appear to be restaurant owners buying things in bulk here, which is probably a sign that it's not an expensive place. Signature product: Half of a large animal (frozen)
Arkadia: This is the supermarket for tourists, with prices to match, plonked in the middle of Paceville. Signature product: Small plastic box full of melon pieces which is considerably more expensive than an actual melon.
Tower: Great value supermarket, but you must negotiate narrow aisles surrounded by claustrophobic shelves stacked with products. Signature product: Everything, if you can find it.
Marks and Spencers: Limited selection, unlimited prices. But some people like to shop in expensive supermarkets - they have money, so why not? Signature product: Expensive mints, packaged in faux-1920's tin box.
Lidl: If you are European, you probably know Lidl. Selling no-name (but perfectly good quality) brands in bulk at cheap, cheap prices. Signature product: Scuba wetsuit at €14.99.
Smart Supermarket: Smart Supermarket in Balzan near Naxxar is probably the biggest supermarket on the island, so if you can't find it here, you won't find it anywhere. Signature product: Tesco range.
Local Mini Market: Usually a dimly lit cave (cuts on the electricity bill you know) selling whatever products the owner wants to sell. Signature product: Old Maltese man having spirited and long winded conversation with the shopkeeper (in Maltese) as you wait patiently behind him. (Yes, I know this is not a product.)

Scotts are reasonable, I think there's about 8 scattered around. Mostly frequented by ex pats as far as I can see!
Lidl in Malta is in my experience a thoroughly unpleasant affair. A chaotic noisy and disorderly place. 'Never again' I say. Every time I go in there...
I quite like to go to Pavi in Qormi-the closest thing to a hypermarket you're going to get on a mini-island. Big, good selections of everything, loads of parking, reasonable prices.
I haven't made it to Pavi but have heard it's a popular option alright.
Yea I love Pavi. The DIY section is very handy and well stocked also for people like me who stand around looking at tools. :)
try JB store for home stuff(Ilkin area), Smart(Birkirkara) is cheaper for food, local stores works till 2 pm so useless. The point(Sliema) is the biggest mall and it has every kind of store and more expensive
Yes I agree with these recommendations: lost of household goods at decent prices at JB, and Smart has the most extensive range of food products.
